Hey y'all, welcome back. So today we're going to talk about it the ketogenic diet and related diets low carb high fat style. That's can offer. Any protection against infectious disease, whether it be acute or chronic lingering like Lyme disease and Borelli and babesia or even a cute like the coronavirus. This is very hot right now. So many people are concerned. Here's this little small factoid. So I live in King County. I live in Kirkland Washington literally less than one mile away from my home is Evergreen hospital where the first fatality in the US was reported for from the Quran.
0:30
Norovirus a 50 year old gentleman just passed away. I think it was yesterday or Friday evening. So this is top of mind for a lot of folks. And so I wanted to kind of shed some light on some emerging science that is coming from Yale University and other researchers talked about how at least an animal models that the low-carb high-fat style diet May confer immunity against influenza virus. And what does that mean in the context of Corona? It's too early to tell of course we can, you know, make these sweeping egregious statements, but I do
0:59
I think there is something emerging here. There's multiple papers coming out showing that the ketogenic diet at least in animal models up regulates a critical T helper cell called the Gamma Delta T helper cell in the the mucosal barriers that is within the lung tissue. So to make a long story short, what we're going to do is cut to some footage from the metabolic L Summit where I was on a panel with dr. Don Geiss T know Rob wolf Sarah Hallberg and a simil harta and a question came in from the audience about this about is there a you'll hear the
1:29
very soon, you know asking this panel of folks who study this myself included, you know, if there is any research out there. So Rob wolf tackles a question first then I talked about some of the research and then towards the end we're going to do is I'm going to cut back to just me talking right here and share with you some of the top ways that I'm supporting my immune system right now and my daughter's immune system and my family's immune system and what I recommend for you and your family as well. So if you want to get full access to this video and audio and all the other
2:00
Metabolic Health Summit videos, please check out their website metabolic Health Summit.com. You can use a promo code muscle 10 to save 10% off all the recording. So I think there's over 45 of these some amazing researchers scientists authors opinion leaders, you know, this is I'm literally going back through and I'll share a few Snippets over the next several weeks is I really listened to some of the amazing talks, but for a low price of I think surround 65 dollars depending upon which package you get you can get lifetime access to all these
2:29
so so definitely check that out again over at metabolic Health Summit.com and let's cut to it and we'll hear the audience question and then Rob and I will kind of tackle and share our insights about how low carb high fat style diets might confer or help the immune system in those individuals that eat that way. So here we
2:45
go.
2:58
Hi do any of you know if any work has been done research on the ketogenic diet and this metabolic approach in the world of infectious disease bacterial viral parasitic whether as a primary approach or is it adjunct and in particular I'm thinking about things like chronic lyme disease and stuff in that family. I dunno like on the the innate immune response piece. The LDL particle has a
3:26
Protein that LPS binding protein. So LPS is a bacterial fragment that can be very inflammatory when it makes its way into vertebrate, you know circulatory systems. And so this is one of the you know, biological trade-offs. It's going on somebody that has higher lipoproteins will be able to clear something like LPS out of the system much more effectively and definitely anecdotally we hear some interesting.
3:56
Arresting studies about you know, decades-long lime infections that have not responded anything else responding to something like a ketogenic or even like a carnival or type intervention amazing question. And so earlier today you heard from Brianna stub. She recently was John Neumann publish a paper about adipocyte inflammation. This is an animal models by the way, but they showed a shift in the T helper subsets within the fat tissue that's characteristic with metabolic inflammation. So as we gain more visceral adipose tissue we
4:26
Get an infiltration of various that means cells macrophages T helper cells T lymphocytes that release inflammatory cytokines that cause this feed-forward cycle of more fat on fire if you will to dumb it down, but the research review that they highlighted which you can find I shared it on my Instagram recently. They highlighted some words from a doctor Clemson, I think was his name and he actually showed that this again in animals that the ketogenic diet did upregulate innate immune system activity in the lung tissue.
4:56
So mucosal immune cells are you know affected by our metabolism. So the more insulin resistant we become we do lose tolerance within our immune system. So you mentioned Lyme disease and other chronic inflammatory autoimmune disorders. We know that changes in the microbiome that Ted talked about and changes that you heard about what jongro ackerman's IAM usin a philia the gut bacteria change with the ketogenic diet increases T regulatory cells. So I think for chronic inflammatory disorders there certainly hope
5:26
Acute inflammation from infections. I don't know that there's any research at least in humans at this point, but maybe animals.
5:33
Thank you. Alright my friends. Well, I hope you enjoyed that little snippet. So again all the metabolic Health Summit videos are found on the website over at metabolic Health Summit.com. So here's just a few notes before we part ways in today's little bonus episode. You know, I quoted the researchers name wrong. Her name is Emily Goldberg. She's over at Yale. And she's now her group is actually published two papers showing that the ketogenic diet can first protection against influenza.
5:56
Us at least in animals, so I just want to make sure I'm not here saying that if you go keto you're going to be immune against a Corona virus, that would be egregious. That would be irresponsible. I'm not saying that in any way shape or form. I am just sharing with you that there are tens. There is a trend emerging in at least in animal model studies showing that against the influenza virus and the specific cell types that are up regulated within the mucosal tissue. The ketogenic diet tends to have some sort of protective effect at least in the respire ettore.
6:26
So I think that's kind of interesting. It's noteworthy. It's worth considering if you want to do everything you can to make sure that your immune system is strong and I'll just say I really get sick anymore, but I will say that you know, that's kind of conflated in the sense. Like I'm doing a lot of different things breathwork low-carb high-fat style diet fasting going in my cold plunge every single morning, but you know so far this year. I've taken 12 flights all over the Eastern Seaboard Southwest the
6:56
west and I've got to get sick. I normally get a little something in January. This is one of the first January that I can remember that I didn't get anything at all and I'm just proud to say that you know, there's nothing really special about me proud to say that you can probably appreciate your immune system and boost your immune system in the same capacity that I have by embarking on a lot of things so I created this blog post over on my website which is where the show notes are and links to the video version of this little snippet in the panel if you want to check that out so you can swipe
7:26
Up or tap depending upon if you're on Stitcher or Spotify or iTunes and you can get access to the blog post. But you know, so what are some things that I would suggest for your immune system right now? Well, first of all sleep is super important so we know that individuals that are sleep deprived. We know that our immune system is actually from our circadian rhythm perspective really active when we're sleeping. And so if you're short changing your body on sleep, you may not be getting the regenerative effects within your immune system and potential, you know, any lingering path.
7:56
Origins or exposure that you had during the day that would be compatible combated while you're sleeping may not be there. So you may come down with something. So sleep is very important. I think the sauna and the once you punch of sauna in contrast and cold plunges can be super effective. One of the articles that I shared in the show notes was actually looking at the immunological effects of a high heat sauna for 20 minutes and the scientist Quantified the changes within various immune cells monocytes and macrophages and tea.
8:26
Four cells within the immune system after just one sauna therapy session and it was profound now the in contrast, you know, it seems that extreme temperatures on both ends seem to be favorable for the immune system. And so this is why Cole plunges have been talked about extensively the cult Irma Genesis. It affects the brown adipose tissue and causes the Beijing of the white fat more function like brown fat. We've talked extensively about this with
8:56
In bickman so you can check out our YouTube channel or scroll through past episodes to learn more about that. But the cult thermogenesis also seems to have a favorable effect within the immune system on a myriad of different levels. So definitely consider that I mean you can start at just doing cold showers again on that blog post it that's in the show notes. I shared an article. It was a kind of an open label study where they had a control group and they had randomize people to either take cold showers daily and
9:26
A self-reported in a big kind of a work setting workplace typesetting and they had individuals not take cold showers and they reported sick days in the office place and the individuals that took cold showers. Guess what they were they reduce their incidents of getting sick and had way more at work days. They didn't have to stay home from illness and so forth just by taking cold showers. So I think a cold plunge were jumping in a river once a week would probably be even better or in addition to or it would supplement your cold shower.
9:56
Our so what about supplements? I'm in a lot of people want to know about supplements, you know for since 2006. I've sold supplements to doctors. I've been in the space for a while and I hear so many different things from practitioners that were customers of mine and now friends of mine and and our own customers through our bioscience line vitamin d and vitamin A. I can't speak highly enough about these two nutrients for the immune system. Of course, there's many other systemic health benefits to these two nutrients, but I suggest
10:26
Somewhere around 2,500 to 5,000 upwards of ten thousand international units per day of each, you know, you can overdo both. So sometimes more is not better. If you're like me and you travel and you get busy sometimes what I'll do is just a bolus dose one day a week. And so I'll do like a hundred thousand international units of vitamin D. You know, we have a product called essential fatty nutrients. I'll just take like four or five capsules one day a week. It's fat-soluble. There are some residual build up and then if you forget about taking
10:56
It you know during the rest of the days of the week where you're traveling you don't want to bring a bunch of things with you. That's one option. If you feel you're getting some acute onset of something. So when I perspire Tori tract infection, you feeling like an itchy scratchy throat something like that. That's when you can load up on both of these and take between fifty and a hundred thousand international units. I wouldn't do that every day. This would be one or two days tops and cap it with that because there is some toxicity at higher dosages and and it can affect calcium absorption.
11:26
Option and things like that. So that's something that you could do. Zinc is another micronutrient that comes to mind. This is a mineral. It's found in muscle meat it's found in liver. So if you're not eating organ Meats, if you're vegan vegetarian, if you don't like red meats, if you eat a lot of fish things like that, you might want to supplement with a zinc glisten 8. There's a raw material vendor in Salt Lake City called Albion minerals. They make I think they're the world's biggest mineral supplier. So our own brand miles science we sourced directly from
11:56
them again. I'll be honest the company. So it's a magnesium or I'm sorry. It's a zinc bisque. Listen a chelate. So it's very absorbed its absorbed. Well, even if people have GI issues and things like that. It's a 25 milligram capsule you can do if you feel something coming on you can do fifty to a hundred milligrams, you know, if you over you can overdo the zinc because zinc and copper have this delicate balance. So I don't suggest, you know overdoing this think basically you can supplement ongoing perpetuity 25 milligrams you
12:26
Take it at night for men may increase testosterone some of you might remember there was a ZM a formula that was used. I remember in high school. I used it when I was playing football and it was shown actually was studied at the college that I went to Western Washington University zinc magnesium and aspartic acid the zma that combination has been shown to improve testosterone levels in men presumably it could affect women in that same capacity. I don't know the proposed mechanism of action so to speak but it's
12:56
'The considering so if you're going to take zinc and you remember it try to take it at night if you forget about it, just take it when you can. But again if this is something where you're going to be performing at maybe your shortchanging our sleep you have a busy work schedule you have finals coming up you're traveling you could take maybe 75 milligrams of zinc every day for a few days not ongoing but just a few days just to ensure you have adequate zinc many Studies have shown that zinc deficiency is linked with a bunch of different.
13:26
With immune-compromised ation, basically, so if your immune system can be compromised as well as many other biological systems with zinc deficiency. Another thing that comes to mind is strain-specific probiotics. Now, it's kind of sad actually because probiotics have been touted as these cure-all tummy AIDS like, oh you have an upset tummy or you want to improve General gut health just take probiotics and I think that's really a shame because when we think about probiotics,
13:56
Attics and just how I kind of unpack some of the specificity about zinc or vitamin D probiotics are very strain-specific. And so it really depends on the nature of the strains the quantity of the strains you're getting and how those strains cross talk and communicate with your own GI bacteria and also your gastrointestinal immune system. So the research is actually very specifically showing that the benefits of probiotics are strain-specific and
14:26
It's not just like lactobacillus acidophilus. There's lactobacillus acidophilus DDS one. So the DDS one is the strange you have the genus species string. There's a lot of skills acidophilus La 14. There's n CFM. There's a bunch of these different strains for a bunch of different genus and species. And so there's the some of the products that then I'm in the strains that I'm particularly excited about are the ones that bolster the innate immune system. I want to say bolster.
14:56
I mean up regulating phagocytosis, which is the ability of the immune system to Seek and Destroy pathogens up regulating natural killer cell function and boosting overall immunity and conferring protection against potential pathogens and a few of these trains. We've actually put together in a product that we call Pro bio Supreme override miles science.com. And what's unique about these is the probiotics are grown on a dairy and gluten free media. It's a potato starch. They're packaged in a nitrogen purged Bliss.
15:26
Pack so that means they're very shelf-stable kind of the enemy against probiotics. If you will over the counter is a lot of these things are just packed put in like a plastic bottles sometimes opaque bottles, which is where you can kind of the translucent bottles where you can see through moisture and oxygen can get in there. And then therefore the stability goes down dramatically over time and what's unique about our probiotics to is how we list them on the label and the sensor work quantifying exactly how much
15:56
of each individual strain is on there. See what a lot of companies actually do is they find the most stable string and the cheapest train and they bundle the probiotics together in what's called a proprietary blend so you don't really know how much of what strain is in there. You just see this this mishmash of things and what they do is they just the expensive strains or the strains that are not very stable. They'll just put pixie dust levels, you know in the mixture but as long as it's on the label, they figured people don't know the difference anyway, so what we like to do is quantify exactly
16:26
See how much of each strange you're getting in terms of colony-forming units make sure there's proper overages in there to make sure that it's stable up until the expiration date and last but certainly not least we encapsulate these in what's called ADR or an acid-resistant vegetable capsule what's unique about that is that enables a probiotic strain? So actually survive the caustic agents of the GI tract, of course your gut is a source of entry for pathogens, right? So that's why you have hydrochloric acid.
16:56
Not just to break down meat and protein but hydrochloric acid can actually you know, cause degradation of pathogens that you might swallow or inhale that are aerosolized in the air bile acids bile is actually very antimicrobial and I have this sneaky suspicion that that might be one of the mechanisms through which the ketogenic diet might affect immunity and affect these different immune cells because bile acids are not just relegated to the small intestine. There's bile acids found in the brain. There's bile acids it make
17:26
Our way into the heart tissue and by elastic bile acid signatures are in imbalances in those signatures are linked with all sorts of diseases even Alzheimer's and heart disease. So this is pretty profound. And so I think getting good healthy fats is good for systemic Health by way of if nothing else affecting bio flux in turnover and bile, but we're getting off topic here. So the bile are antimicrobial and so all these things
17:56
we can degrade like if you just swallow a probiotic powder, you might degrade it with some like acid in your bio. So getting back to these acid-resistant vegetable capsules called Dr. Caps there. It's a cellulose Matrix basically a capsule just looks like any ordinary capsule. It's a little slightly thicker, but it's designed to degrade in the alkaline environment of the upper portion of the small intestine the duodenum, so that's kind of what's unique there and last but not least.
18:26
Delivered in these nitrogen Purge blister pack so you can travel with these are very stable. If you live in the south Southeast or Southwest where it's really kind of human you can get humidity in Texas and Florida and Alabama and on the Eastern Seaboard and all that sort of stuff. You don't have to worry about these things degrading, you know in your cupboard because of the protection that is offered through the packaging. So those are some things that are unique again, you know, just you can buy probiotics anywhere but we take the extra effort to make sure that what we're delivering
18:56
Whirring is some of the best in the market place over on our website at my o science.com. That's Mi o XC ience.com and there's a banner there with some of the new products that we have talked about in this episode and and others down the road. So I really hope you enjoyed some of that. I know it's you know, just a little random five minutes insightful session, but I'm getting some good feedback from you all about these bonus episodes. And so if you know of a friend or family member that might benefit from this conversation, please
19:26
This with them if you enjoyed this, you can take a screenshot and share this over on and Instagram story. Be sure to tag me metabolic underscore Mike.
